Job description
From PLACE’s job post, as they wrote it.
Your Opportunity:
At PLACE Institutional, we’re building a category-defining company at the intersection of real estate, technology, business services, and the consumer. As a profitable, hypergrowth startup on the path to an IPO, our standards are high, our team is scrappy, and our commitment is to execute the best work of our lives.
This is YOUR CHANCE to shape the backbone of a company that’s scaling rapidly and innovating boldly. As our Due Diligence Quality Control Underwriter, you’ll partner with the [Manager], founders, and executives to protect the accuracy, compliance, and integrity of every loan file we touch, across Non-QM, Conventional, Jumbo, Government, Correspondent, and business purpose loans. If you thrive in complexity, entrepreneurial problem-solving, and believe in scaling through tech and AI, this is your PLACE.

Who Develops You: VP of Operations
What You’re Great At:
You are a detail-driven underwriter who loves digging into a loan file until it makes sense. You know how to spot inconsistencies and protect against fraud, negligence, errors, and omissions. You have 5+ years of current due diligence quality control and underwriting experience, including 3+ years reviewing Non-QM loans, and you’re comfortable reviewing for a wide range of investors, each with its own guidelines and overlays. You calculate income confidently across every earner type, from W-2 wage earners to self-employed borrowers. You have strong appraisal review skills and a deep understanding of DSCR and business purpose loans. You know Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guidelines and QM/ATR inside and out, and you’re familiar with post-close quality control best practices on both newly and seasoned originated mortgages. You work well independently and with a team, and you can juggle a high-volume pipeline without losing your rigor. Experience at a due diligence firm and with Laura Mac is a plus.
What You’ll Do:
* Review mortgage loan files for accuracy and confirm all required documents are present
* Perform due diligence reviews of residential mortgage loan applications and documentation to ensure loans meet investor, product, and AUS guidelines
* Analyze borrower credit profiles, collateral, and capacity to repay, including accurate income calculations
* Calculate and analyze loan-to-value ratios and debt obligations
* Analyze purchase contracts, title commitments, and other pertinent loan documentation
* Enter review results into our proprietary software
* Conduct risk analysis, make decisions on deficiencies found during review, and recommend resolutions
* Stay current on agency, state, and multiple investor guidelines, and participate in ongoing training as the industry evolves
* Manage your time and prioritize your workload to meet daily production goals, clear QA feedback, and perform within department audit standards
* Live our core values and take on other duties as assigned by your manager
Salary: $70,000-$90,000/year, depending on experience.
